Review # 38: Some Like It Hot

Hello and welcome back to another review! Some Like It Hot is the second show I saw this past weekend, so let's get into it!

Plot: This Some Like It Hot is inspired by the 1959 movie, of the same name starring Marilyn Monroe. Some Like It Hot is about two best friends and musicians Joe and Jerry who live in Chicago during the 1930s. Joe and Jerry audition to play at Spats Colombo's nightclub and they get the job, but before they could even play one song, both Joe and Jerry witness a murder committed by Spats. With Spats and his henchmen chasing after them, Joe and Jerry need to find a way to escape. That's when Joe comes up with a plan to disguise themselves as Josephine (Joe) and Daphne (Jerry) and travel with Sweet Sue's all-women band to escape Spats Colombo and his goons. However, what happens when Joe starts to fall in love with the band's lead singer, Sugar Kane? And will Joe and Jerry get caught? Find out in Some Like It Hot! The plot is really fun, wacky, and I really wanted to know what happened next! So if you want to see a comedic musical, then you should see this show!

Characters: One of the highlights of the show was Joe and Jerry's unbreakable bond. No matter what situation Joe got them into both would stand by each other's side. I also liked that Jerry gave Joe some advice even if he did not listen and I liked that Joe stuck up for Jerry while auditioning for a spot at Spats' nightclub. No matter what happened to them, they always care for each other while also being humorous at the same time. Sugar Kane was another great character. I wasn't expecting her to be a rebel of some sort but I thought that it helped with her and Joe's chemistry as they both get themselves into trouble on way of another. Other characters such as Sweet Sue, Osgood, Minnie, and even Spats were entertaining and fun to watch come to life on stage.

Songs: A lot of the songs that where featured in this musical were very upbeat and were full of enegry. Songs such as "What Are You Thirsty For?", "Zee Bap", "I'm California Bound", "Poor Little Millionaire", "He Lied When He Said Hello", "Some Like It Hot", and "Baby, Let's Get Good" where all exciting songs. However, one song was truly a highlight for me which was "You Can't Have Me (If You Don't Have Him)" which is a song that is so much better if you see it live. Even if the plot of the show doesn't interest you, I recommend seeing the show just for the music and even listening to this amazing cast recording of the show.

Sets: The sets in the show were not the best sets I have ever seen, but they were still pretty cool. I really enjoyed the scenes that featured the hotel and the train. I even like how in one scene, the actors were having a fun time running around on stage as the sets represented the hotel hallways. Even at the beginning and end I loved the 1930s nightclub aesthetic of these sets. So even though the sets aren't the best, I still thought they were an interesting part of the show.

Overall Some Like It Hot is the 'hottest' new musical on broadway. I personally think its a great comedy full of energy. As I have said before the musical does feature a moment where some chacaters are murdered on stage and they do briefly mention sex. So if you are not comfortable with your child seeing that then maybe go see another show. Other than that, I definitely recommend seeing Some Like It Hot on Broadway!
