Review # 21: Waitress

Hello everyone! Back with another great show to review! We are going to review the famous Sara Bareilles musical, Waitress. So let's get on to the review!

Plot: The story is similar to the 2007 movie with the same name. Waitress tells the story of a waitress named Jenna. Jenna is obsessed with making new pie recipes for the diner since she and her mother used to do that together. However, Jenna's life won't be the same when she finds out that she is having her abusive husband, Earl's baby. Jenna's friend's at the diner, Dawn and Becky try to help comfort her since her husband won't. Disappointed that she will never leave her awful husband, the owner of the diner, Old Joe, tell her about a pie baking contest with a big prize. Jenna gets excited and creates new pies as the show continues. However, that's not the end of Jenna's story yet! Jenna starts falling in love with her Doctor, Dr. Pomatter, who is helping her with the baby. The only problem is that he is married! Will Jenna leave her husband? Will she win the pie contest? And will she end up with Dr. Pomatter? Find out in Waitress. I really loved the story and at times you really feel bad for Jenna and her situation. Overall the story is wonderful and totally worth checking out.

Characters: All the characters in the show was amazing. Jenna really stood out and I liked how they showed what she was thinking about at some points. Earl, Jenna's husband was really awful and hurtful but we kinda needed it for the show! Old Joe and Dawn were really sweet and kind to Jenna. Becky and Cal (another one of Jenna's coworkers) brought the sass for the show. Dr. Pomatter and Ogie (Dawn's boyfriend/husband) brought the laughter and amazement to the show. Lastly, how can we forget Jenna's daughter Lulu at the end of the show! She brought the cuteness to the show. Overall all the characters were amazing and so real!

Songs: All the songs in the show were written by the famous, Sara Bareilles. All of the songs were so beautiful such as Opening Up, It Only Takes A Taste, When He Sees Me, Bad Idea, A Soft Place To Land, and Take It From An Old Man. Other songs were very fun such as Never Ever Getting Rid Of Me, and I Love Like A Table. Other songs were dealt with serious topics such as  The Negative, Dear Baby, You Will Still Be Mine, and the famous song of them all She Used To Be Mine. They were all amazingly done and they are great tunes to listen to even if you are not a Broadway fan.

Sets: All the sets were amazingly done. The way they got the diner set up was so cool and I really like how in one part, a table could be a doctor's table and the same table could be used for a little bar area in the diner. I also liked how they had the pies that Jenna made on each side of the stage. The sets are really cool and totally worth checking out.

Overall, Waitress was a fun show. Adults and teens should totally see this show. Fans of Sara Bareilles and her music should totally see it. Also, fans of the Waitress movie should go see it as well. Kids, however, should not see this show because it deals with serious topics such as abuse and sex. Waitress is a beautiful show, so have a slice of pie and go see Waitress the musical.
