Review # 20: King Kong

It's my 20th review and we are going to talk about the giant gorilla that came to New York for an epic performance.

Plot: The story is similar to the 1933 and 2005 movies with the same name. There are more movies that have King Kong in them, however, these two are equivalent to the Broadway show. The show starts out with an actress named Ann. Ann tries to find a hard working acting job however, she is rejected. Ann becomes homeless later on and grows desperate for a job... and food... That is where she meets Carl, a 'famous' movie director. He promises Ann that she will have a huge part in his next film, which will be on Skull Island, a place where he knows very little about. On their way, to Skull Island Ann befriends a man named Lumpy, who works on the boat and gives her water and coffee. When they get to Skull Island they start filming as soon as possible, however, they are stopped by a mysterious roar. Ann is stuck and is captured by the beast, while Carl watches and tries to get the beast on film. At first Ann was scared of the huge gorilla, but later on, she realizes that he is kind and that he cares for her. Ann finds her way back to Carl. Lumpy gives Carl the idea to take the big gorilla into the big city for an unbelievable show. Ann, not realizing what she has done, helps Carl bring Kong to New York so they can perform the show with the lead star: KING KONG. Will Ann realize what she has done and help Kong? Or will she go on performing Carl's show, leaving Kong to rot. Find out in King Kong. The story was a bit dry. Without the great King Kong himself, the show would be nothing. There were a few good parts of it but it really wasn't the best plot of a Broadway musical.

Characters: The characters worked lovely by themselves, such as Ann's character. However many of the characters did not go well together. I thought the relationship between Lumpy and Ann was odd. It was just a weird fit since Lumpy was kinda a filler character until Kong came on stage. Carl's relationship with everyone was off as well. At first, Carl seemed like a good person to Ann but then, out of nowhere, he turned into the villain. I was kinda disappointed in how his character was like, I kinda wished they did something different with his character. Even Ann's relationship with Kong was a disappointment. Other than that, the casting was well put. Kong was so cool. The way that they created Kong to live was spot on and unbelievably creative. It was so amazing to see these people work hard in a show.

Songs: The songs were very forgettable. There was only one song I really liked in the whole show which was called Queen of New York. Other than that the songs were plain and boring. The songs were not annoying, unlike Charlie and the chocolate factory, but they were not fun or enjoyable. It was more depressing and plain. So I wouldn't waste your time listening to the songs.

Sets: The sets were the best part of the show. The way the created the scene with Kong climbing up the building was amazing. Even another part such as him running in Skull Island was fun. I felt like I was there with them, going on this epic journey. The sets were pretty lit.

Overall, King Kong was a fun show. I recommend taking kids (who are not afraid of loud noises or big monsters), I also recommend this to teens and adults who have a creative side. Another group of people who should see King Kong is fans of the King Kong movies. Even if King Kong's songs are forgettable and plain, it is still worth seeing the Kong puppet and the amazing sets. So go see him alive on Broadway in King Kong.
