Review # 11: Groundhog Day: The Musical

Hello! Since I forgot to do my review of the show, Groundhog Day, I might as well review it now before it goes on tour!

Plot: Groundhog Day The Musical has the same plot as the movie that goes by the same name that came out in 1993. The story is about a newsman named Phil Connors. Phil and some of his co-workers have to go to Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney to see Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day. Phil Connors doesn't like Groundhog Day and he can't wait to leave until there is a huge snow storm that keeps them in Punxsutawney. Phil ends up staying the night and wakes up realizing it's Groundhog Day all over again. Will Phil ever get past Groundhog Day? Or will he stay trapped in Groundhog Day forever? Find out in Groundhog Day The Musical. The plot had many twists and turns, and things I would never thing Phil would do. I was very interesting to see people make a musical out of this movie.

Characters: Honestly, There were only two main characters that the story focused on which was, of course, Phil Connors and his co-worker (which later love interest), Rita Hanson. The other people were just there and had no point to the story which was kinda silly because Phil stays there for a long time and you would think he would get to know the people there. Phil was insane but a good insane. Of course, if you had to stay trapped in the same day over and over and over again I'm pretty sure you would act like Phil. Although Phil would get on my nerves at some points of the show, like how he keeps flirting with his lady, named Nancy and that we never see her again until this one part in Act 2, but after that, we never see her again. Rita was a lovable character. She was like most girls and hoping that she meets a prince of her own. I loved that she was filled with hopes and dreams and she finally got them in the end. Sad to say most of the characters were not as special to the ones in the movie.

Songs: The songs were not so great. There were about 3 good songs in the show like the songs, If I Had My Time Again or Hope. But other than that most of the songs could have been changed or have been cut out. One of the songs that I thought should have been cut out was the song Playing Nancy. It's the song that Nancy sings at the beginning of Act 2.  It was useless because it didn't make any sense to the story and we never see Nancy again. This song was super annoying and it was kinda silly for the writers to make a song for this girl that wasn't important to the story and that we never see again. So as for the songs, they were not as memorable and not very moving to the plot.

Sets: The sets were cool, the way they made the news car was super cute and it felt like you were there in Punxsutawney with Phil reliving Groundhog Day with him. Here was this one part where the sets got crazy but a good kind of crazy so it was fun to watch. So the sets were great.

Overall, Groundhog Day wasn't the greatest musical about a movie but, it was still fun to see. You can definitely take kids 9 and up to see this show (because there is one scene that might be too much for younger viewers). Adults should see the show as well. Teens would most likely be bored with the show so you should take them to see Dear Evan Hansen or Anastasia. Also, fans of the movie should totally see the show. Hopefully, they made some changes to the tour, so please go see Groundhog Day The Musical.
