Six Musicals That Deserve The Broadway Treatment

Hello everyone! It has been a while since the last time I have posted anything. Mostly because of the Broadway shutdown, I am unable to review any broadway/off-broadway shows. However, I have some quarantined reviews of pro-shot musicals posted if anyone misses Broadway. Even though this is a blog about Broadway reviews, I wanted to have a little fun and write something that I am passionate about. During quarantine, I listened to many musicals that were never on Broadway. So I wanted to write a list (in no particular order) of shows that deserve to be on Broadway. (I will also include the plot of each musical and some of my thoughts about the musical). Hopefully, this list of shows will make you want to listen to these musicals and if you have a show you would like to see on Broadway let me know in the comments down below.

1. Ratatouille The Musical

Plot:  Based on the 2007 movie, Ratatouille The Musical follows the story of Remy, a rat who loves to cook. Upon being separated from his family, Remy finds himself at his favorite chef's restaurant. However, business at the restaurant isn't as good as it used to be. Remy decides to help out by making a delicious soup but he is spotted by a garbage boy named Linguini. Fortunately for Remy, Linguini befriends the rat and asks him to help him learn how to cook. However, Linguini can't cook at all. Luckily Remy finds another way to help Linguini and follow his dream...

Feedback: This musical started as a Tik Tok trend, however in January 2021, many Broadway performers band together to help raise money for the Actor's Fund and performed a charity concert of the show. Something that I love about Ratataoullie The Musical is how many people worked on this project. All of the amazing songs that were performed in the charity concert were written by Tik Tokers. But that's not all, many other Tik Tokers also did the choreography, set design, costumes, and even designed a playbill for this Tik Tok version of the show. With all the hard work put into this musical, I think Ratatouille would be a Broadway smash. Unfortunately, you can't stream the Ratatouille the musical charity concert anymore. However, you can listen to the soundtrack on Youtube or Tik Tok.

2. The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals

Plot: The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals is a horror/comedy musical that was created by Team Starkid in 2018. The story is about a man named Paul who doesn't like musicals. Paul has a boring life that he seems to enjoy, however, that all is about to change when a bunch of singing and dancing aliens comes to take over the world. It's up to Paul and his friends to save the world from this world-wide musical. Will Paul be able to save humankind? Find out in The Guy Who Doesn't Like Musicals.

Feedback: I love all of Team Starkid's musicals. They are laugh out loud funny. I feel that this musical would be really fun to see on Broadway. I think the props and sets would be cool to see on a Broadway stage as well. Plus the songs are upbeat and catchy. If you are interested in watching this musical or any other musical by Team Starkid, then I recommend checking them out on Youtube. (Please Note: These musicals do include cursing, smoking, drinking, and adult humor).

3. Death Note The Musical

Plot: Based on the 2003 manga series and 2006 anime series, Death Note centers on an intelligent high school student named Light Yagami. In a world filled with crime, Light only wants justice. One day after school, Light discovers a mysterious notebook. Whoever's name is written in the notebook shall die. Light uses the notebook to secretly kill people who committed awful crimes. People start to take notice of all these deaths and realize that this is not a coincidence. Soon everyone knows about this mysterious killer and they start to call him Kira. To some, Kira is a hero, but to others, Kira is a murder who must be stopped. Will Light be stopped? Or will he outsmart the people against him?  I guess you'll have to see Death Note The Musical to find out.

Feedback: At first, I was confused about why someone would write a musical about this manga/anime. With its dark themes, I figured that this wouldn't be a good musical to see. But I was wrong. Despite the dark story, Death Note The Musical has some amazing moments and songs. Sure, it's not your typical merry musical, but it is still an awesome show that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I do not understand how this musical is still not on Broadway. Unfortunately, there is no English version of the whole show, however, you can watch the Japanese version of the entire show with English subtitles on Youtube. If you are not interested in watching something that includes subtitles, then I highly recommend listening to the English soundtrack on Youtube that includes many Broadway stars featuring Jeremy Jordan as Light Yagami. (Please Note: This musical deals with a lot of death, murder, and dark themes).

4. Back To The Future The Musical

Plot: Based on the 1985 movie, Back To The Future The Musical is about a boy named Marty McFly. Marty lives an average life in sweet old 1985, however, everything changes when Marty's friend, Doc Brown, builds a time machine out of a DeLorean. Now, Marty is stuck in 1955 and life there gets a little hectic when Marty accidentally causes his now teenage parents to never fall in love. Now Marty has to find a way to save his life from being erased from existence and find a way back to the future. Will Marty be able to do it all? Find out in Back To The Future The Musical!

Feedback: This musical debuted in London's West End just when the pandemic was on the rise. A while ago I had posted about the musical on my Instagram, @broadwaybuzzreviews. Even though the cast album isn't out yet, I listened to a couple of the demos and they were amazing. Also, think this is a great musical to hit the Broadway stage. You can listen to them on Instagram on their official account (@bttfmusical). Also, stay tuned for the cast album coming this summer.

5. High School Musical

Plot: Based on the 2006 Disney Channel Orginal Movie with the same name, High School Musical focuses on the relationship of Troy and Gabriella. Troy and Gabriella met on vacation as they were chosen to sing a karaoke song together. After vacation, Troy assumed that he wouldn't see Gabriella again, however, it turns out Gabriella just moved to his school. Troy and Gabriella want to spend more time together but it is a challenge since Troy is the basketball star at school, Gabriella is in the science club, and they aren't in the same social group. However, both of them decide to break the status quo and join the school musical.  But will that draw the two together or draw them apart? Find out in High School Musical.

Feedback: It would be so cool to see it come alive on stage. I know this musical did have a concert tour years ago, however, it isn't the same as a Broadway stage. I think Disney can take this musical to the next level. I would really like to see more of the story and I think it would do very well on Broadway. If you haven't seen High School Musical or any of its sequels, then go watch it on Disney+.

6. Finding Nemo The Musical

Plot: Based on the 2003 movie, Finding Nemo is about a single, clownfish father named Marlin and his son, Nemo. Marlin is very protective of Nemo and he doesn't want him leaving home. However, on a class trip, Nemo gets taken away and it's up to Merlin to go find him. Will Merlin find his son? Find out in Finding Nemo.

Feedback: At Walt Disney World, you can see this musical live. It has some cute songs and eye-popping puppetry. If they added more songs and gave the musical some of that Broadway magic then I definitely think this musical would be a Broadway hit. This would also be a great musical for the family. If you wanted to listen to some of the heartwarming songs from Finding Nemo The Musical, they are on Youtube.

I hope you were interested in some of these musicals. Hopefully one of these musicals on the list will make it to New York City! Down Below I included all of the Youtube links that I had mentioned. You can click on the title and it will be right there. I hope you check some of them out!
