Review # 30: Newsies (A Quarantined Review)

Since many people had the experience to see Hamilton on Disney+, you might be wondering if there are any other musicals similar to Hamilton. Well, the good news is that there is another historical musical on the Disney+ streaming service, it's called Newsies. Sure, the musical takes place 45 years after the events of Hamilton, but after this review, you might want to check it out.

Plot: The musical, Newsies, is based on the 1992 Disney film with the same name. The story takes place in 1899, New York, where young boys quit school to sell newspapers to support themselves. These boys are called the Newsies. One day, while the Newsies selling newspapers to the locals, Joseph Pulitzer, a publishing giant, decides to increase the newspaper prices to gain more money. However, the Newsies are furious when they find out the have to pay extra to sell more papers. Jack Kelly, the leader of the Newsies, refuses to pay extra for newspapers and decides that he and his friends, Crutchie, Davey, Les, and the rest of the Newsies will go on strike. This strike catches the eye of a young reporter named Katherine Plumber, who raises awareness for the Newsies by writing an article about their strike. As Katherine supports the Newsies, Jack falls for her. While realizing his feelings for Katherine, Jack has to deal with another problem as he tries to avoid the refuge, a place where troubled young boys go. Jack wants to escape the big city and all of his problems by running off to a little place called Santa Fe. Will Jack ever go to Santa Fe? Will the Newsies get the justice they deserve? Find out in Newsies The Musical. Personally, I thought this was such a sweet story to tell and it is based on true events about the Newsboy Strike of 1899. This story will make you want to learn more about this historical moment and it will get you cheering for the Newsies. Overall, this plot is phenomenal with all its amazing twists and turns.

Characters: I love how well the actors bonded together in the show. It was like they were a little newsboy family. The brotherly relationship between Jack and Cructhie had is very heartwarming. Also, Jack's friendship with Davey and Les is adorable as well, as Jack helps them get a start in the newspaper selling business at the beginning of the show. Another thing I enjoyed about this is how all the actors in the show had a New York/Brooklyn accent while they were talking and singing. Their voices gave an extra layer of excitement to their roles.  I also like to point out the role of Katherine Plumber. Kathrine is a wonderful role model for all women, as she is willing to work hard and stands up for what she believes in. In the show, she and Jack have amazing chemistry on stage and she encourages him to keep on fighting for what is right. I believe the writers did a fanatic job in writing her character. Another character to point out is Joseph Pulitzer. Pulitzer was cunning and manipulating as he forced Jack to stop the strike. Every time he comes on stage, you know that something is up which makes the show more interesting. Last but not least, we have our main character, Jack Kelly. Jack is a role model for most of the Newsies and he even risks himself to help support them. Even though he wants a life outside of the big city, it just shows how much he could be leaving behind. Jack hasn't got a biological family in the show, however, he gained a family filled with many 'brothers' who look up to him.  Which makes his character charming and sincere. Overall all the characters in the show are so loveable and talented that it makes you want to watch the whole story all over again.

Songs: Many of the songs in the show were very well written. Some of the songs I would like to highlight are "Carrying The Banner", "The World Will Know", "Seize The Day", "Watch What Happens", "Watch What Happens (Reprise)", "King Of New York", "Brookyln's Here", and Jack's famous song in the show "Santa Fe". However, I would like to point out that many of these songs have a huge dance break in between them. This is because Newsies is very popular for having extraordinary dance numbers. Overall, the songs are straight from a Disney classic that will make you want to sing and dance to the cast album all day long.

Sets: The sets In this show looked like giant skyscrapers/buildings to represent the setting of New York. It was fun seeing the Newsies dance, run, climb, and play on these three-floored sets. Another thing I enjoyed about the sets was that they had projection screens to represent other places such as Pulitzer's office or a theater. Overall it was enjoyable to see these sets in action and seeing the actors have so much fun acting on them.

Overall, this historical show is spectacular to watch with the whole family. Children, teens, and adults will find something special about this show. History buffs and Disney fans can enjoy this show as well. This show isn't quite Hamilton, but it's definitely a fun show to watch if you are looking for something entertaining and inspiring. So go watch Newsies The Musical on Disney+!
