Review # 24: Pretty Woman: The Musical

Hello Folks! I'm back with another review! This time I went to see Pretty Woman The Musical. Is it as good as the movie? Find out in this review!

Plot: The plot is similar to the 1990 movie with the same name. For some who don't already know, Pretty Woman The Musical is about Vivian Ward, a broke prostitute who desperately needs money to pay her rent. One day, while Vivian's roommate, Kit DeLuca helps her seduce men on the streets, she stumbles upon Edward Lewis, a wealthy businessman who makes a living by buying failing companies. Not knowing his way around California, Edward asks Vivian for directions to the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Vivian helps him out by giving him a ride, only if he pays her. When they get there, Edward asks Vivian to stay the night, Vivian only agrees just so she can get the money she needs to pay rent. The next day, Edward makes a deal with Vivian. He needs her to be his plus one for a week so he can land a deal with a failing shipyard business. If she does this, she gets paid $3,000. Vivian willingly accepts the offer and becomes his fake girlfriend for the week. However, Edward starts to realize that he has grown to like Vivian and might have feelings towards her. Will Edward express his true feelings to Vivian? Find out in Pretty Woman The Musical. The plot was alright, there were some parts that could have been easily taken out since it did not do anything to enhance the story. Although, for the most part, the musical really did have a good storyline.

Characters: For the most part, the characters in this show were excellent. There were only a few characters that I was hoping to see a bit more of such as Kit and Mr. Thompson/Happy Man. I really enjoyed the roles of Vivian and Edward. I loved how they made Vivian a strong woman especially at the end of act one and also in act two. I also liked how they didn't make Edward cold towards Vivian in the beginning. The only problem with these two characters is that I felt that their chemistry was fake. Their relationship in the show could have been so much better. However, on a good note, the whole cast had great singing talent. Overall the characters were alright not the best Broadway characters but definitely not the worst.

Songs: The songs in Pretty Woman The Musical are very forgettable. There is only a handful of decent songs such as 'I Can't Go Back', 'You and I', 'Freedom', and 'You're Beautiful'. However, even with these fantastic songs, the placement of these songs was off and sometimes they would put a song that has nothing to do with advancing the storyline. An example of this is the song 'Never Give Up On A Dream'.  It would just make it weird for the audience to watch and these songs were basically just lazy filler songs for the secondary characters. Sadly 'Oh, Pretty Woman' wasn't sung in the show. Only during the bows, they performed the iconic song from the movie. Also, this song isn't on the Original Broadway Cast Recording. Fortunately, you can hear a little piece of the intro throughout the show. Overall, most of the songs weren't the best thing about this show.

Sets: The sets were very well done. I loved how they lit up and matched the emotion of how a character was feeling. I enjoyed watching Kit or Vivian climb up or down from their apartment. Also, the way they brought the hotel to life was so cool. Overall the sets were so incredible to watch and I hope they make more set designs like this in the future.

Overall, Pretty Woman The Musical was unique. I recommend adults going to this show. Also, fans who enjoyed the 1990 movie would like this musical as well. Since there's cursing and sexual references (since Vivian is a prostitute), I recommend taking children to see Disney Broadway shows. I wouldn't recommend teenagers to see this show either because they would find this show boring or lazy. I recommend taking them to see something like Dear Evan Hansen or Mean Girls. If you want to see Pretty Woman The Musical, then get your tickets now because the show is leaving Broadway on August 18th. So go see Pretty Woman The Musical!
