Review # 22: Tootsie

A while back, I've seen the new hit musical, Tootsie. Is it just as good as the movie? Find out in this review!

Plot: For some who do not know, Tootsie is based of the the 1982 cult classic film with the same name. Tootsie is about a failing actor named Michael Dorsey. For every role Michael auditions for, he ends up having problem with the writing, which leads him into getting fired. Unable to get a job, Michael becomes hopeless, until his ex-girlfriend, Sandy tells him about the part she is auditioning for. This gives Michael the  idea to transform himself into Dorothy Michaels, so he can get a job. To his surprise, he ends up getting the role. Everyone in the cast and crew adores Dorothy, including Michael's crush/coworker, Julie. However, many different problems arise the longer Michael keeps his secret. Will Michael be able to keep this up? Find out in Tootsie. I adored Tootsie's plot and I loved how they made him a Broadway star rather than a soap opera star for the Broadway show. I also loved how they updated the show into modern times. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and it was wonderfully written.

Characters: In addition to the ecstatic plot, the characters in this show were well written. Michael Dorsey is your typical problematic guy. It is no wonder why no one wanted to hire him. Yet, when he changes into Dorothy Michaels his attitude changes and helps make the show a smash hit. Michael's love interest, Julie, was another amazing person in the show. She kind of made you feel bad for her since she gave up everything to be an famous actress on Broadway. Julie's chemistry with Michael (well Dorothy) is stunning, and it touching to see that she supports his ideas throughout the show. Side characters such as Sandy, Jeff, and Max were another fun group of people to watch as they brought the comedic factors to the show. Every time they came on stage you were in for a laugh. Overall, this astounding cast of characters are a ten out of ten in my book.

Songs: All the songs in the show were incredibly impressive. I adored the fact that everyone in the cast had a good time singing these songs. I especially enjoyed the opening number. The opening number is very upbeat and it makes you want to sing along. Another hit song is the song that Sandy sings in the beginning of act one. Even if you can't remember half of the lyrics, you will definitely remember the beat. Another fun song is Unstoppable, a song that Michael sings at the end of act one. It is so enjoyable to see him wanting to play so female roles that we wouldn't get to play if he wasn't portraying Dorothy Michaels. This is another upbeat tune that ends the first act perfectly. I cannot wait for the cast recording to come out so I can listen to these smashing songs.

Sets: All the sets that were used in the show are totally different to the sets that are used in other broadway shows. I love how instead of making another musical screens as sets (such as Mean Girls, Be More Chill, and  Anastasia) they decided to stay true to classic broadway sets with drops and very thought out creations of Michael and Jeff's apartment and Julie's apartment. I also loved the fact that they used trapped doors on stage to help bring the props to life. Overall the wonderful set designs were amazing and perfectly colored to bring this show to life.

Overall, Tootsie is an breathtaking show. I recommend adults and teenagers to go see it. Also fans of the original 1982 movie should check it out. However, I wouldn't recommend taking children to see this show since there is a lot of cursing in this show (They have a whole song in the second act were the F word is contently used). Other than that, you will totally enjoy this new take on Tootsie: The Musical.
