Review # 14: Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical

Coming from a person who hates the T.V. show, here are my thoughts on the Nickelodeon T.V. show that made it to Broadway, Spongebob Squarepants The Musical.

Plot: The plot is based on the T.V. show called Spongebob Squarepants. The story is about Spongebob and his neighbors enjoying a great day in their town called The Bikini Bottom. Everything was going just like any other normal day until something bad happens. They find out that there is a volcano that is going to blow up and destroy their beloved town. Spongebob and his best friends, Sandy and Patrick team up to save their town, until Sandy is humiliated by the town and Patrick ends up leaving the team. Spongebob worries that he can't save his town from extinction without his friends' help. Will Spongebob save his beloved town? Will Spongebob prove that he is not a simple sponge? And will Spongebob's neighbor, Squidward show that he is not a loser? Find out in Spongebob The Musical. This was an interesting story for a Broadway show. I felt like they could have picked a better storyline to do for a Spongebob musical. Overall the story was alright.

Characters: Ethan Slater portrayal of Spongebob was unbelievable. He was like the real-life Spongebob, voice and all! I really enjoyed him play that famous role. I also enjoyed Mr. Krabs (Spongebob's boss) daughter, Pearl's voice. She was awesome! Some of the other characters had show-stopping numbers like Squidward, Patrick, Sandy, and even Plankton and his computer wife Karen were enjoyable. The cast was amazing to watch perform.

Songs: Many of the songs were written by famous artists such as Panic At the Disco, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Plain White T's and many others. Most of the songs were very fun and upbeat such as Bikini Bottom Day, Hero Is My Middle Name, Chop to the Top, and Super Sea Star Savior. While other made you feel bad for the characters such as Tomorrow Is, I'm Not a Loser, (I Guess I) Miss You, and who can forget Not A Simple Sponge. One song from the T.V. show actually made it into the musical, which is called the Best Day Ever. Most of the songs were show-stopping numbers and it was so amazing to see and listen too.

Sets: The sets made you feel like you were a kid in a playground. They were very interactive and fun to watch the cast have a "ball" with them. The sets were amazing and fun to see in person.

Overall, Spongebob Squarepants The Musical was a fun show to see. I recommend taking kids to see this show because it is very kid friendly. Also, teenagers would love this show if they grew up watching Spongebob as a kid. I also recommend fans of the T.V. show should come see it as well. Adults, however, should most likely see another show because Spongebob can be a little corny and stupid for most adults to see. Spongebob is very funny and gives a lot of laughs for people to enjoy. Even as a person who hates the show, I really enjoyed it. So go see Spongebob Squarepants The Musical!
