Review # 29: Shrek: The Musical (A Quarantined Review)

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, all Broadway shows are suspended. However, Netflix is showing a recorded version of Shrek The Musical that was on Broadway. So why not do a quarantine review of Shrek The Musical?

Plot: For those of you who do not know, Shrek The Musical is based on the 2001 film called Shrek. Shrek is about an Ogre named Shrek, who lives his life alone in a swamp. He is happy with his life all to himself until some rejected fairytale creatures arrive at his doorstep. The fairytale creatures tell Shrek that they have been banished out of the kingdom of Duloc and now they have to live here. Unhappy with the new situation, Shrek visits the kingdom of Duloc to talk to its ruler, Lord Farquaad, about his new living situation. Lord Farquaad agrees to get the fairytale creatures off Shrek's property until he does something for him. Lord Farquaad wants to marry Princess Fiona so he can become king. So he tells Shrek that if he rescues the Fiona from her tower and delivers her to Lord Farquaad then he can have his swamp back. So with the help of his new best friend Donkey, Shrek goes out to find the princess and get his swamp back. Will Shrek save the princess? Will he get his swamp back? And will other things happen along the way? Find out in Shrek The Musical! This musical was just as great as the movie. It was funny, it was interesting, and it even had heart! Overall, the story was nice!

Characters: All of the characters were so true to their original role in the film. Shrek was still grumpy, but he also had some funny parts. Donkey was also funny and still remains the comic relief in the show. Princess Fiona was strong and talented. Lastly, Lord Farquaad was amazing in his role. I also enjoyed the new backstories that they gave some of the other characters such as Shrek and Lord Faquaad. I even liked the fact that they did more with the fairytale creatures than they did in the movie. Overall the characters were so fun to watch on stage.

Songs: Shockingly, Shrek the musical had some catchy tunes in the show. Songs like "It's A Big Bright Beautiful World", "I Know It's Today", "What's Up Duloc?", "Don't Let Me Go", "Who I'd Be", "Make A Move", "Freak Flag", "Morning Person", and "Travel Song" were all so amazing. Some of the songs from the movie had made it into the show too such as "I'm A Believer." Unfortunately, for some of the Shrek fans, the famous song "All Star" was not in the musical at all. However, there all the new songs that they have written for the show make up for the fact that "All Star" is not in the show. Overall the songs are really cute and I definitely recommend listening to the cast album.

Sets: I really enjoyed the set design for this Broadway performance. It was so lifelike and filled with color. I also loved how they made the forest so pretty and enchanting as Shrek and Donkey were walking along. I also liked how quickly they changed the forest sets to Duloc or Fiona's tower so quickly. Overall the sets were amazing.

Overall, Shrek The Musical is a great show to watch if you ever want something to watch while you are stuck inside. This musical is great for the whole family. Kids will enjoy watching this and teens who were fans of the original movie would like it too. All fans of Shrek should go watch this amazing musical. Just one warning, Shrek The Musical does include a little bit of cursing, so if you don't want your child exposed to that then I would recommend something else for them to see. I also recommend adults to watch something else as well since they might think that this musical is too foolish for them. Other than that, Shrek is an awesome musical to check out! So go watch Shrek The Musical on Netflix!
